CHAPTER NINE
ROMY pulled up next to Sebastianâs car, which he had left at her office. She turned off the engine and turned to face him, not yet ready for the night to end.
âSo what do you think?â
The car stereo played softly in the background and the street lamps shone a pale glow into the car but Sebastianâs face was in shadow.
âI think I am in love with your car.â
He ran a hand over the back of her seat, his fingers splaying through the soft cream sheepskin covers, tickling at her hair. Romy imagined his fingers playing across her skin in that manner and she flushed all the way to her toes.
âI mean about my parents.â
âAh.â She could make out that he was nodding slowly. âTheyâre great.â
She let out a long-held breath. Apparently it mattered more than sheâd thought that he liked them too. âAnd their marriage?â
âPicture perfect.â
âSee?â She tucked a leg beneath her. âSee how it can be. How it should be? If you really do want a family, one that will last, that is what you should be searching for.â
She felt him shuffle in his seat as he turned to face her, his profile now caught in the hazy golden glow of the street lamp. They sat mere inches apart. Their knees all but touching. Their warm breath creating a curtain of fog at the corners of the windows.
Sebastianâs hand stopped moving across the back of her chair and Romy watched, transfixed, as it reached up and took a hold of a curl that rested on her shoulder. He was close. So close.
âYou once told me that you thought love should be an unexpected, accelerated inferno,â she said, feeling bold under the veil of darkness. âIt should grab you by the throat and not let up for a moment as it whirls you on its relentless, ravishing ride.â
âYou remembered that?â
Verbatim, she thought. âIt wasâ¦poetic.â
âSo it was.â
âSo, have you ever, really, experienced that kind ofâ¦sensation?â The chill was being kept at bay, outside the cocoon of the car, as Sebastian kept her warm with his continuing caress.
âWhat do you think?â he asked, the height of mystery in his dark corner of the car.
âI donât know what to think.â Her mind was fast becoming numb as the sensation of his fingers brushing against her neck took over all thought.
âIs that how it is with Antony?â
Heâd finally asked. Sheâd hoped in vain that Antony would be off limits but Sebastian had obviously reached the limit of his curiosity. His pale eyes were eerily translucent in the created light. They blinked slowly. And they watched her every minute reaction.
Her hair was tugged lightly as he wrapped and unwrapped his fingers in her curl. She knew she should pull away, but there was nothing on earth that could make her make him stop what he was doing.
âI donât think thatâs something you and I need to discuss,â she said on a whisper.
âWhy not? If you are on a roll at showing me happy relationships,
